A Tiny Trip

This past weekend, we loaded up the boys and headed for a quick trip to SA. We had originally planned to go to Galveston this weekend to see my Granny, and visit our good ol' favorite places. Thanks to Hurricane Ike, those plans changed. (Side note - to see first-hand how the storm has affected a family living in Galveston, visit this blog - http://texasbug.blogspot.com/. She is a friend of my friend Heidi.) Luckily, Granny was safe and sound at my parents during the storm, she got to meet L, and return to her home that sustained little or no damage. Amazing since the eye went right over her neighborhood.

Back to our weekend - we took the boys to SeaWorld on Friday, and then to downtown SA on Saturday. Of course, J LOVES SeaWorld and had a blast. Especially since he was with his cousins and they pretty much dote on him.

One of J's favorite parts of the day - eating Shamu shaped ice cream with Daddy!

L's first trip to SeaWorld. I think he watched a couple of seconds of some of the shows, but basically, just enjoyed being outside. He looked around all day!

J and Cousin C fed and petted the dolphins. Doesn't he look cool?
L was a little apprehensive about the dolphins. I think because the dolphin kept looking at L like he was dinner!

Saturday - all of the kids first visit to the Alamo! Growing up in this area, I probably visited this site at LEAST a dozen times as a child. Not until I was older did I really understand how amazing this historical site is, as are all of the missions in SA. I hope that our boys have the same love of history that their Daddy and I have. And their Grammy, who is a proud member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution - they have contributed funds to the current restoration project at the Alamo by the way.)
After the Alamo, we were off to the Riverwalk and the Rainforest Cafe. Here, J found a new friend - a "pet" rubber snake. Just don't put it in my bed thank you!

The kids on the Riverwalk. It was the perfect day to be outside. We could have just sat on the benches by the river and people watched all day - o.k., the adults could have done that. The kids were ready to go to the children's museum!

A Day of Pure Heaven

Where else is an almost 4 year old boy in heaven? For our little guy, that would be at a college football game. And not just ANY college game - an Aggie game. :)

J was treated to a day with the "boys" this past Saturday when my dad and hubby took him to see his beloved Aggies play in College Station. He had such a good time - loved the game, loved the band, loved a nap during the 3rd quarter. lol! But I think, according to the hubby, what he loved most of all was going onto the field after the game and running around. Some older boys apparently let him play with them, and he told me he caught the football and made a touchdown. How exciting!

While there, he was told he was very cute by two Texas Tech college girls (cute girls according to the guys). They tried to get him to put his "guns up" - the raiders hand symbol - but my SMART little Aggie promptly stuck up his Gig 'em thumb...right back in their faces!!! And told them he really wished that tech had not won. Awwwww....

Long time no bloggy-blog

I've been away for a while, and unfortunately, not due to anything fun.

Not long after my last post, we found out that one of my Aunt's had passed away - my Great-Aunt Lorene. It was a big shock, as we all 'thought' she was going in for a routine bypass. Not that bypass is really routine, but so many people have them nowadays and come of them just fine. She had no real prior history of heart problems, so we thought, well, she'll be one of those many that come through with flying colors.

It was not to be. She barely made it through the surgery, which lasted for hours and hours, only to pass away a couple of hours later. Apparently, things were much, much worse than her doctors expected once they got into her heart, and there were many complications. I don't think any of us really even thought her not making it was a possibility.

She was a great woman, and one of the neatest "older" people I knew. Out of all my great-aunt's, she is the one we spent the most time with and was closest with. She and Uncle Howard made regular trips to my hometown to visit all of my life, and I told my hubby recently that I realized in college, after being home during one of their visits, that she was someone that I really related to, and felt like if she were my age, we would be great friends. She never met a stranger and was so full of life. I am sad that she was not able to meet our sweet baby L in person, but at least she was able to see pictures of him and about a month ago, she sent the sweetest note with a gift. I really thought we would see them over the holidays. She will be missed by all of her family.

On a side note, she was very much into genealogy, which my own mother has taken to, and has left a special project in mom's care. I know mom will do her best to see it through and as I get older, it really is so interesting to not only find out who our ancestors were, but also what they DID. What they were LIKE. Very cool. If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't all be here, now would we? :)

We all made the trip to my hometown for her services. Luckily, we made it for visitation Tuesday night. I saw my Uncle - he is the sweetest man and I feel so badly for him. I was able to give my Grandma a couple of squeezes (Aunt Lorene was her SIL, married to my Grandma's only sibling and brother.) We saw their kids, their kid's kids and so on. Then, Tuesday evening, I got sick again.

Less than 48 hours after taking my last pill for that darned mastitis, I felt the same symptoms starting all over again. I prayed it was just a clogged duct, or something else, starting up. See, the "wonderful" thing about this illness, is once you feel the first symptom, the rest of the symptoms just SLAM into you.

I went to bed Tuesday night with pain in one of my breasts around 9 p.m. I woke up at 11 p.m. with fever, chills and incredible pain. I tried to go back to sleep and wish it away (I know, crazy) but finally had to get up, take some pain meds, and face reality.

Since I had just finished taking antibiotics, my doctor wanted to see my right away. So we had to load up and drive back home, missing my aunt's graveside service. I was feeling so badly at this point, I just wanted to crawl in bed and pull the blankets over my head, but at the same time, it broke my heart not to be there for my Grandma and Uncle. And myself to be honest. But the doctor was very concerned, so off we went.

This time around this infection has been way worse, and way more painful. I've had fever twice as long, and frankly, it bites. I think I am on the upswing now (praying that I am), and sitting here thankful that there are meds that can take of it and that my baby is not feeling any effects of any of this. He just eats away like normal!

Speaking of eating, I hear someone waking up. I think we'll watch a little Saturday morning TV while he eats, then crawl back in bed together. Daddy and big brother are off to the Aggie game with Papa, so baby and I are going to do a whole lot of nothing today. Sounds heavenly to me.

Way Back Wednesday

I've had this idea to start "Way Back Wednesday" for awhile. I have some great old photos that I need to scan anyway, so why not share here.

The problem is that I'm still not up to par, so today, I'll share some not-so-way-back photos. I think I'll start with some from the past three October's (we bought our first digital camera in the fall of 2004, but I'll spare pics from that October when I was WAY preggo with J!)

Instead, here's a pic of our family last Oct. 2007 before my hometown Homecoming game. I think it's the only Homecoming game I've gone to since right after I graduated from high school! We went primarily so J could be super-close to a football field - remember, my alma mater is tiny so the bleachers are literally right next to the sideline!!! LOL!

This one is from Oct. 2006. One of J's breathing treatment sessions. This wasn't his last, but I think we only had one or two more after this. He hasn't had to use the nebulizer since right after his 2nd birthday (he's about 22 months old here). Looks like a pro, doesn't he?

Finally, a little video from Oct. 2005 of my army crawler. This was J's favorite way to get around before he started walking. I almost forgot until I started looking at old video today. They grow so fast...

When it Rains, it Pours

Well, unless you are literally talking about rain here in our area. HA! We actually did get 1/2 inch here during the night...we need more though.

No, I'm talking about our weekend and the past few days. I have been MIA due to both my boys and myself all being sick. First, J was coughing and acting like he was trying to get sick last week. Then I was stricken with a bad infection (mastitis for you moms that can sympathize) and knocked off my feet on Thursday evening/Friday morning. I just have to say, that is one brutal infection. I had every symptom under the sun, including fever & flu-like symptoms, and it was awful. I just never knew it was that bad, or that I could get it this late in the game (I thought it only hit mommies in the first 4-6 weeks post-partum.,,apparently not.)

After starting my meds Friday afternoon, I thought, at least we are heading into a weekend. It should get better, right? Nope. That evening, the baby started acting like he was getting sick with a cold and from then on, no sleep was to be had by anyone. By Saturday, I had the same virus/cold as L. No fun for either of us - he's too young to really take anything for a cold (except nose drops) and I'm still nursing, so most cold meds are off-limits to me. The good one's anyway.

Thankfully, I think we are coming out of the worst of it today...knock on wood. These horse-pill antibiotics my doc has me on seem to be clearing up the bacterial infection, and I think my head cold is finally retreating too. Right now, L is fast asleep and seems to be breathing MUCH better. And J still has allergies, but says he feels "fine mommy."

Now, Daddy, who bragged to our pediatrician about how he was the only one NOT sick, is feeling kinda poopy. I have to snicker a little, but of course, I really hope he isn't getting sick. And if he does, he better stay far away from the rest of us!

Three Months Old!

Our big boy is THREE MONTHS OLD today! Yikes. Where is the time going?

I decided at two months to start taking a picture of him by the same bear in his crib every month. Since I just have two pictures, the comparison isn't too dramatic, but you can definitely see a change! I must say, I am a tiny big sad he is getting so big so quickly. But at the same time, each day brings a new joy. For example, he is starting to turn his head towards my kisses. Melts my heart!

LJM at two months:

LJM at three months (today):

Lovin' that Thumb!

He's trying really, really hard to figure out how to suck his thumb. You can clearly see him in action here. He favors sucking on his left hand, and is desperately trying to learn how to get just his thumb, not the whole hand, in his mouth.

At times, I try to help him out. Then memories of "hot sauce" being put on my thumbs by my parents flood my mind. Yup, I was a thumb sucker. And it took me a looooooooong time to break the habit (though I get it honest according to my Granny. Apparently my dad did it too and didn't want to give it up either.)

He does take a pacifier, but doesn't love it. Sigh. I know I won't be able to stop him from putting that thumb in his mouth, but since I already know how to take a paci away (J loved his and it really wasn't difficult to break him of it) I just can't help but wish he'd be content with that. Much easier to take away a pacifier than cut off a thumb, ya know??? ;)
